For those interested, this article is especially helpful to parents of young children. We strongly recommend 100% xylitol sweetened mints. Xylitol seems to not only “not promote tooth decay;” but also to be potentially effective in inhibiting it. Xylitol-sweetened gum is also available; but the opinion of our team is that gum is “wasted energy” on the joints of the jaw. Either is superior to products sweetened with sugar, other natural sweeteners, or artificial sweeteners. We welcome your questions regarding healthy dental habits.

Soda and energy drinks (even diet) can be destructive to your teeth. If you consume either, we recommend taking a few steps to reduce your risk of tooth decay:
1. drink through a straw
2. drink water after consuming the beverage
3. brush your teeth afterward, but wait 30 minutes before doing so -enamel suffers less damage when brushing occurs after teeth have had time to mount their own defense against acidic erosion

Dr. Oz devoted half of his program yesterday to raising oral cancer awareness. Our dentists conduct an oral cancer screening as a part of every periodic examination; and we utilize the brush biopsy procedure, referred to in Dr. Oz’s program, as a first-line test whenever something looks unusual. If you are not sure that you are being screened at least annually, please bring it up with your dentist.

If you train hard, be sure to see your dentist to assess your risk for dental disease that may be related to your athletic regimen. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Medicine in May, 2011, suggests that elite triathletes exhibit a general high-risk profile for tooth decay and erosion. This is believed to be due to a combination of long training sessions resulting in decreased salivary flow, and the intake of fermentable carbs and acidic sports drinks to meet high energy demands during training and competition.
