Fact or Fiction: Popular Misconceptions about Dental Implants

Tooth loss is a serious problem in the United States. Some estimate that as many as 100 million adults have lost at least one tooth. As dental implants continue to grow in popularity today, so do the misconceptions that surround them.

Dr. Ryan and his team want to help you separate fact from fiction so you can make well-informed decisions about your smile.

Here are some popular misconceptions about dental implants:

1. They cost too much.

Would you rather replace your bridges and/or dentures every 7 to 15 years, or make a one-time investment in permanent tooth replacement? In the short-term, implants are higher in cost than bridges or dentures. But it’s important to consider that bridges and dentures require additional treatment and replacement over time. With proper care, implants from Dr. Ryan are designed to last a lifetime.

2. They look fake.

Only people who have never seen a well-designed dental implant would think they look fake. Our implants are created from ceramic to look just like your natural teeth in color, shape, and size. Only you and the highly trained eye will ever know the difference.

3. I’m too old.

Although osteoporosis and other age-related jawbone issues impact how implant treatment is accomplished, implants are designed for patients of all ages. If you’ve spent many years dealing with the challenges of dentures, now may be the time for you to experience permanent tooth replacement.

4. They’re painful.

With today’s modern sedation options, the treatment itself will be pain-free. You may experience some tenderness for a few days following surgery, but we have some simple solutions to help you through it. The discomfort will soon be gone and you’ll have a permanent tooth in its place.

5. Any dentist will do.

Not all dentists have the advanced education and clinical skill to effectively place dental implants. Proper implant treatment requires a clinical professional who has invested the time to master the intricacies of precision implant dentistry. Whether you choose Dr. Ryan or not, please find someone with proper implant training and experience.

If you are missing one or more teeth, we invite you to experience the comfort and confidence of permanent tooth replacement. Please feel free to contact Dr. Ryan’s team in Sacramento if you have any questions about whether dental implants are for you.
